[soo-won is around! he seems to have a book with him, and he's just finishing it up again(?). when he notices someone approaching, he offers up a gentle smile]
[She's trotting around with a couple folded up pieces of paper, a pen in her mouth as she furrows her brow at her PHS. But she'll perk up when she sees Soo-Won.]
Ah, yeah! Something like that. [She'll look curiously at whatever is in his hands, though.] What are you reading, Haku-san?
[he'll turn the cover over so it's easily for her to see - ]
A medical book. One of the Leaders let me have it. I'm seeking to make sure that I have it memorized by the end of the week so that Archer needn't taken on all the burdens of seeing to our injuries on his own.
Oh... yeah, we have that first aid building open now, too. [There is a pretty strong flash of concern as her eyes flick to him. YOU WERE VERY HURT SIR...] Do you think people are going to keep getting hurt like you and Chijin and the others did?
[At his own question, she slips the papers between her hands, folding them further while shaking her head. That concern stays, though it morphs a little, tinted with a regretful sort of fear.]
Mmn... kind of.
[She's never, ever been a good liar, and that doesn't change here.]
It's a possibility. Given the recent situation over the weekend as well, it's something that we need to consider that some might not choose to go peacefully.
[which he doesn't sound surprised about either? idk people are people, he just wants to be ready for what happens. though his eyes follow the papers in her hands]
.... you needn't tell me if you don't wish to, but it seems like you're carrying something heavy.
[Existential dread comes in many flavors to all ages.
She doesn't respond at first, trying to choose her words without sounding too panicked.]
It's normal to forget people that die after a while, right? I didn't think much of it at first... not until I was writing something for the shrine in the inn. I... couldn't really remember Hajime-chan's full name. I thought as hard as I could, and I could sort of remember what she looked like, and things she said, but...
...
It was just a couple weeks ago, wasn't it? Are... we forgetting them that fast?
I wouldn't be surprised if that was also an effect of this place.
[but in comparison to her panic, he continues to sound calm - almost unsurprised.]
But given the nature of this place and the way that the nova, the very fabric of memories, is unstable, I wouldn't be surprised if that's starting to go awry.
Are you writing notes to yourself so that you can keep the details of things with you?
[just - a gentle correction. but he's still calm, and he didn't expect anything of what he'd said to be new, just confirmations of what they've come to find.]
You could inquire if the Leaders have the same issues that we do, and if they can still remember, that might be a way for the memories to be stored somewhere safely.
[A beat, her temper flaring just slightly, before it dies down. No, stop, she knew what he meant.]
I should be more clear with my words. I'm sorry.
I meant those that have died. None of deserve this, and I know that much. But the people that are being killed just for being here... it's cruelty on top of unfair circumstances. Those are the ones that will suffer a really unkind fate if we can't remember them.
[She swallows, before straightening back up, that resolve slipping right back where it had been before.]
There's something else I'd like to try too, Haku-san. It's a little, um, busy, and will require some teamwork, but... it does involve writing things down.
[the temper flare manages to surprise him just a bit - did he say something wrong? even if he understood the sentiment, the word choice was a bit hard to accept - before he continues to listen.]
.... what are you working on? Do you need any help?
[Sometimes you're just trying your best and you have to stomp your foot a little at being corrected it's fine ): ):]
It's something I started yesterday, but I... I want to expand on it a little.
I wanted to have people write down some simple things about themselves at first - like their names, where they were from, something they liked to eat. Simple things like that. Since I noticed the dead were starting to get a little fuzzy, I wanted people to try and put together something to remember the dead, as well.
When I tried it with Elsa-sama, though, she helped confirm something for me. She'd forgotten something that she'd written in a journal... but I was still able to read what she'd written, before she'd forgotten it.
I know some people know Vesda-san's name as well, since it's in the PHS, even though he doesn't think it's his real name. If we're able to write down things, to keep them somewhere that isn't our own minds, then maybe it can help us fill the gaps for one another if things keep getting worse.
.... perhaps? I wrote down some basics the first day that we told that our members would go, and while all the information is still there, I can no longer recall someone whose name I apparently wrote down as important. That's happened in a few cases.
If you give your memories to someone else to hold onto by telling them beforehand, then those actually stay with them - but when they tell you what you've forgotten, it makes no difference because the information does not remain nor do you get to suddenly remember what you lost.
Is that what you're looking to do? I believe that's been a practice between a few people already, and even if it's not perfect, I do recommend it.
Yeah, you got it exactly. When I tried with Elsa-sama, in regards to someone important from her life, I could read everything, and even tried to tell her... but the words were blank space for her no matter where it was written, and whatever I said sounded like nonsense to her.
It makes me think that... maybe, somehow, the Realm itself wants us to forget.
Even if it's not perfect, or if it can be abused by others, I think the idea is going to be important. If we really start to lose ourselves, then I don't want people to start thinking desperately. Yoshizawa-chan and Chijin both said they'd be willing to help, so that I don't do everything on my own.
If that's what you're willing to do, then I encourage you to pursue it. Whatever it is that'll bring your heart peace.
[he's not really in the business of telling people what's good or bad ideas for themselves? it's only when it comes to actually tipping the scales in the favor of cruelty on accident that he'll speak up.
but this just sounds like a personal project, so let your freak flag fly, hikaru]
It sounds like you have a good set of people who can aid you with your endeavor.
week 2, tuesday
Ah, Hikaru.
Exploring some more this week?
no subject
Ah, yeah! Something like that. [She'll look curiously at whatever is in his hands, though.] What are you reading, Haku-san?

A medical book. One of the Leaders let me have it. I'm seeking to make sure that I have it memorized by the end of the week so that Archer needn't taken on all the burdens of seeing to our injuries on his own.

I know I heard people talking about making sure our weapons were with us... I guess that's what you meant, huh.
[A beat.
She hesitates before shaking her head.]
No, it's nothing like that. I, uh...
...
Haku-san, how, um... how well do you remember Hajime-chan? What she looked like, or sounded like.
no subject
.... it's a bit foggy - but I think that if I focus, I can remember her. Though I admit that it comes slower than my memories usually do.
[he's normally quite sharp but]
Is it frightening to you?

It's not new information, given her lack of surprise at anything he says. But something tightens in her panic, a deep-seeded resolve.]
I promised someone.
If we can't remember them, Haku-san... if we can't remember each other, then how can we expect to save any of the ones who didn't deserve it?
no subject
No one deserves this, Hikaru.
