[She shakes her head again, much slower this time.]
I don't know. I thought maybe it would... it would be a little more clear, but... he still looked so sad, I...
I... don't know if anybody can know. Raven was Raven until Tuesday, and then... he just wasn't...
So when the announcement said it was Raven, I-I thought maybe... maybe there was a mistake, or...
...
Or...
[She can't finish the sentence. His body is burned in her mind, a room of blood and a face that had long since lost its pallor of life. It's not a new experience, to see someone die...
But sometimes you have to watch an adult you cherished die two whole times in the span of four days, and it hurts.]
[... And with that, those little details explained to him, Chiron feels like he understands her burdens a little better.
His expression loosens into sympathy.]
I am sorry, Hikaru, for your loss.
[Chiron and Raven were not close by any means, and he won't lay claim to that sorrow for that reason, but he had seen that Hikaru cherished the man's presence.]
[She swallows dryly, the knot in her throat hard to push away as sorrow creeps up on her, cold and unfriendly.
But she'll have to find her time to cry. And here, with her teacher overlooking her and with people still reeling from both deaths... this wasn't the time.
Whether her forcing that sorrow down to replace it with a pained resolve is admirable or concerning may be up for debate. But it keeps her from shedding tears, giving herself a few moments for her composure and the wet, hot feeling at her eyes, before slowly moving towards the sink to turn on the faucet. Her fingers leave behind red against the knobs. The scent of blood lingers.]
We can't falter tomorrow, Sensei. If Elsa-sama is right, and there's something out there that's trying to steal from us... then if tomorrow turns to something horrible like we did with Shuuya-kun, this is all only gonna keep getting worse. We'll just be giving whatever it is a big meal, and it'll wanna keep coming back.
[He had been considering Elsa's words all evening, because the fear of what could happen again is very real. The combined sorrow of their failures will smoother them and light a beacon for the creature to follow.]
We must, at minimum, find one of the killers. [Preferably two, but Chiron is pragmatic before he is kind. It's why his eyes draw down to Hikaru's fingers, watching as the blood is stripped clean by the faucet's spray, but he lets her handle it instead of falling back on coddling]
If we sacrifice an innocent a second time, I fear what the state of the Realm will fall into.

[Mouth thinning but he does not press. Not yet. Instead he glances down at her, assessing]
Why did you go to see the body, Hikaru? [...] To offer your condolences and farewells?

I know I won't be able to get near him tomorrow. And I...
...
I wanted to see for myself... if it was really him, or... or Schwann-san.

And? What did you discover?
